Normally I do not share SPAM emails.  But I have posted occasionally about Journal SPAM and Conference SPAM.  So what do I do here.  I just received an email that appears to be a hybrid between Conference SPAM and Nigerian advanced fee SPAM.  OMG.  The merging of two SPAM systems.  Too bad the Conference is not about viagra - though since it is about Metagenomics perhaps it somehow got flagged due to studies of the penis or vagina microbiome?   In this case I just had to post ...

Elsevier: bringing us conference SPAM and also empty privacy policies (literally and figuratively)

Just got an announcement for a meeting from Elsevier that I have absolutely no potential connection too.  It is yet another example of Science Conference Spam.  Not really shocking to get it from Elsevier to be honest.  But one part of the email struck me.  This was the end of the message which I post below:

This is a typical SPAMMY system where you get added to a list without requesting it.  So - want to know what the "22 Times" privacy policy is?  Well if you click the link you get

I can guess what it says but fortunately for those like me that don't read Dutch, Google offers to translate. So I clicked on that offer just to be sure: "Page not found."  Great policy.  Maybe I am supposed to pay to access it?  I note - I have not posted the actual original link in the email because it has what appears to be some tracking information embedded in it.  This I guess is what one could call an empty promise of privacy?

Anyway, next I clicked on the link for the Elsevier Privacy Policy.  This time there is an actual policy there.  Not surprisingly it is not very focused on the people at the other end.  Here it is below, with some highlighting by me

Wow.  I get a lot of what one could call "Conference SPAM" with invitations to meetings that seem like nothing more than feedlots.  But this one really takes the cake:

Well, I got invited to another conference that is brought to you by the same people who brought us what I thought was possibly the worst conference ever: Science Conference SPAM: ICEME2011 on all of engineering & metaengineering.  But amazingly this one is just as bad.  Well, actually, these ones - it is two conferences. I guess I could show you the title of the conference but the web address is informative.  I would bet that some other numbers at the end end up being used for other conferences.

Anyway see the letter at the end of this post - it is very similar to the one for the ICEME meeting.  The best part is when one goes to the "About the conference" sections.  For example see here

Anyone else getting lots of China-Conference SPAM recently?

Anyone else out there getting a ridiculous amount of conference SPAM recently relating to conferences in China? I keep getting invited to speak at or chair sessions at various meetings of little relevance to what I do. For example, consider a recent email I got that starts with

This is relating to this meeting: BIT Life Sciences’ 4th Annual PepCon-2011 which has little relevance to what I do. I have been getting many many emails like this over the last few weeks. Not sure what led to the uptick in getting these emails but they are starting to annoy me ...
